With all the rapid, monumental changes that are taking place in the world today, it is important to remember the reason that we are engaged with a political organization. For us, community is built on the same foundation of empathy, caring and love that is the basis for building a better society. With these strong bonds, we can talk about our fears and desires, listen to other perspectives and continually strive to make our communities stronger.
Unfortunately however, sometimes there are forces that try to divide us. Groups and individuals use anger and fear to stir the pot, whipping up heated emotion that focuses on problems, not crafting solutions. You can see this in the behavior of Pierre Poilievre and our own MP Aaron Gunn, who chum the waters with drama and rage but fail to tell anyone how they would be anything better than Mark Carney and the Liberal Government. We must stand strong, united and resolute in the face of forces that seek to divide and dominate us by dismissing the values to which we identify. Here are some of the ways the Liberal Party of Canada and your local EDA are doing just that:
In November the Party held a “Building to 2026” event in Comox. Designed to help volunteers learn how to empower volunteers, raise funds, and reach out to people in the community about the great work this government is doing. This is the first time an event like this was held in our riding and they did it because of the growing support for the party in NIPR.
The Liberal National Convention is being held in Montreal April 4-8. Early Bird registration is open February 8th for a discounted price and there are hotel blocks booked to help attendees get a better price. You can register here if you want to attend. Before registering, check with the NIPR Board by emailing info@northisland-powellriverliberals.ca to see if a registration subsidy is available. The registration cost is also tax deductible so not only will it be a lot of fun, it will also feel good at tax time.
Until February 8th there is an opportunity to vote on policy priorities that will be discussed at the National Convention. All Liberal members can vote so watch for emails from the Party with instructions and descriptions of the various policies.
If you are looking for something more local, our volunteers hold Pints and Politics in Comox and Campbell River at the end of every month. If you would like to host a Pints and Politics in your community, let us know.
Finally, we are looking for new members for the North Island Powell River EDA. Our Annual General Meeting will be in the spring (date TBC) and you can put your name forward at that time. If you are interested in stepping forward to take a more active role in building North Island - Powell River strong and electing a practical and progressive representative for our riding, we would love to hear from you. Please email the chair, Hugh Stainsby at hvstainsby@gmail.com or the riding at info@northisland-powellriverliberals.ca if you would like more information. We have fun, talk politics, and keep things going in between elections.
