The Liberals Did Not Split The Vote in NIPR

The data shows that the NDP were unable to hold onto their previous vote share

During the 2025 election, when I ran as the Liberal candidate for North Island-Powell River, there were accusations that by simply running a candidate, the Liberal party caused the NDP to lose this seat after many years.. This criticism was very much driven by people's fear of Aaron Gunn winning. However this math does not hold up under scrutiny.

According to Elections Canada, the last time the Liberal candidate had a decent showing in the polls was in 2015 when they won 25% of the vote. In 2025, I won 26.2% of the vote. In 2015 the NDP secured  40% and won the riding however in 2025 they secured only 33% of the vote and lost. Very similar showing for the Liberals, very different results for the NDP.

In other words, the NDP have won this riding when the Liberals have done as well as they did in 2025. What went wrong was not the Liberal Party running a candidate, it was the NDP voters who jumped ship. This is similar to the trend that was seen across Canada where the NDP were reduced to only 7 seats.

I understand people are frustrated with the current MP andI know it is not benefitting our communities, especially First Nations. But let’s focus on holding him to account as opposed to rehashing bad math from a year ago.
